Obituary for Nanci Fiore-Chettiar

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the peaceful passing of Nanci Fiore-Chettiar. Nanci passed away at the Westerly Hospital with her family by her side on Friday, January 27th, 2023, at the age of 30. Nanci was the cherished daughter of Tricia Fiore of Westerly and Sekar Chettiar of New London, CT. She was the beloved wife of Sean Haggerty of Laurel, Maryland.

In addition to her husband and parents, Nanci leaves behind her three younger siblings, Nicholas, Taylor and Kasey Fiore-Chettiar and her maternal grandparents, Richard Fiore of Pawcatuck and Sandra Fiore Gilmore and Mark Gilmore of Westerly, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and her adored dog Obi. Nanci was pre-deceased by her paternal grandmother Kittammal Chettiar in Nov 2022.

Nanci graduated with the WHS class of 2010. She was secretary of her class as well as the student council. She played varsity lacrosse, was involved with the school paper and was a member of the National Honor Society. From the fifth grade through her senior year in high school, Nanci was a member of the W.I.N team, a student led community service nonprofit. The W.I.N team and its members won numerous awards, trips and scholarships during Nanci’s tenure.

Nanci was a graduate of Boston College where she earned both a Bachelor’s degree (2015) and Master’s degree in social work (2016). While at BC, she was president of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College, co-director of FACES Council (a student-led anti-racism organization), and an Orientation Leader. She was also voted RA of the Year and received the Dr. Donald Brown Award in 2015, which recognizes a senior who made extraordinary contributions to communities of color in the areas of leadership, service and academic development. While at Boston College, Nanci met the love of her life, Sean Haggerty.
After graduation, Sean and Nanci became engaged and moved to Providence, RI where Nanci worked at Brown University in the Office of Residential Life.

Nanci fought a long courageous battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma throughout most of her adult life. Despite her dismal prognosis, Nanci fought cancer as she lived her life, with a positive attitude and fierce determination.

Nanci’s family would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Westerly Hospital for taking such wonderful care of Nanci, as well as her family, over the last twelve years. Nanci loved everyone at the Westerly Hospital, especially the nurses and CNA’s, and she knew they loved her as well. We are grateful that Nanci was able to spend her last two months being cared for by such wonderful and caring medical professionals, where Nanci felt safe, comfortable and loved. We are so lucky to have such dedicated and caring professionals at our local community hospital.

At Nanci’s request there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life is planned for March 18th at the Calabrese Club. More details will be provided as they become available via Facebook and Instagram. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a non-profit to be set up in Nanci’s honor.
