Obituary for Dwight M. Cornell

Dwight Miner Cornell, 85, passed away at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday, May 17, 2021.

Mr. Cornell was born in Westerly, RI in 1936 to Florence P. (D’Amario) Cornell and Ralph B. Cornell. He attended Westerly Public Schools. Mr. Cornell graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BS degree in Civil Engineering and was a registered Professional Engineer in several states.

After working for several organizations in New York City, Mr. Cornell moved to the Maryland suburb of Damascus, Maryland. Mr. Cornell was employed by Bechtel from 1965 until his retirement in 1993. Most of his work was in the field of design for large nuclear power facilities.

Upon retirement he divided his time between West Palm Beach, Florida and a summer home in Weekapaug. In Florida, he became involved in the activities of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. While with the Auxiliary he taught safe boating courses in the Public Education section and was a Vessel Examiner. Mr. Cornell served as a Flotilla Staff Officer in these endeavors.

In appreciation for the education he received at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Cornell has made sizable donations of money and property to the Institute and has established a scholarship in his name in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

He is survived by his brother Robert; two nieces and a nephew, Christine, Leanne and John, as well as their children; and several cousins.

A Funeral Service will take place at 10am on Friday, May 28th at Christ Episcopal Church, 7 Elm St., Westerly. Burial will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com
