Obituary for Mary Louise Burton (Cayer)

Mary “Louise” (Cayer) Burton, 99, of Ashaway Road, Bradford, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Thursday, April 22, 2021. She was the wife of the late Eric A. Burton.

Born in Alton, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Lumina Cayer.

Louise worked as a clerk for the Bradford Post Office for 14 years until her retirement in 1983 and had been previously employed at Chariho School in the school lunch program.
She was a devout communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Ashaway where she taught CCD for 35 years. Louise was also a very involved member of the Surfside 8 Dancers and Westerly Senior Song Birds. She enjoyed knitting, especially afghans for all her grandchildren.

She leaves two children, Bruce A Burton of Mystic and Brian J. Burton of Coventry; a brother Wilfred L. Cayer of Wakefield; sister Theresa Pharris of Westerly; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Louise was predeceased by her beloved son PFC Stephen E. Burton who died in Vietnam; her brothers, Wilfrid, Alfred, Paul and Joseph L. Cayer; and three sisters, Cecile O’Keefe, Bette Gerrish and Kit Gouvin.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-7pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Attendees will be required to follow guidelines for wearing masks, social distancing and capacity limitations of the funeral home, imposed by the Dept. of Health.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, 169 Main St., Ashaway at 11am on Wednesday, April 28. There is no procession to church from the funeral home.
