George Edward “Bud” West passed into eternal life on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the age of 92.

Born in Westerly, RI, he was a beloved son of the late Eugene E. and Ethel West.

Bud was hard-working and entrepreneurial from his youth, working at the Mohican Bakery during his high school years (RI Honor Society) while also playing varsity football for WHS.
He married Mary Servidio in April 1948 and started his own bakery business, first in Peace Dale and then in Hope Valley. He became renowned for the scrumptious confection called the Bismarck and brought smiles to thousands with his decorated cakes and other baked goods.

A devoted husband and father, he was a faithful communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. He was a passionate gardener, starting plants in his greenhouses during the winter and maintaining large vegetable gardens every year, as well as fruit trees and an abundance of flowers. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

Bud will be deeply missed by Mary, his wife of nearly 73years; his children, Donna West Smith (Brian), George E. West, Jr. (Colleen), Susan West and Matthew T. West (Margie); as well as his twelve grandchildren, Dr. Christopher M. West, Col. Andrew M. Smith, USAF, Natalie West Morrone, David C. Smith, Gregory B. West, Brian P. Smith, Joshua M. West, Aaron C. Smith, Kateri West Riordan, Johanna M. Smith, Matthew J. Smith and Daniel E. Smith.
He was also blessed to be a part of the lives of his 17 great-grandchildren, Marcus, Matthew, and Brooke Morrone; Arrianna, Jaron and Trenton Smith; Kaya, Cali, Gregory and Luke West; Wes, Iris and Willa Riordan; Adeline and Cecilia West; Scotia Smith and Asher Smith.
Bud is also survived by two brothers, Harold W. West of Hope Valley and Donald E. West of Westerly; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Rev. Robert F. West.

The family will welcome relatives and friends for visiting hours on Sunday, April 18 from 2pm– 5pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Guidelines for wearing masks, social distancing and capacity limitations of the funeral home are in effect.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, Westerly. There is no procession from the funeral home to church. Burial will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly, RI 02891 in Bud’s memory. As was the case with so many Hope Valley teens, my first job was at West's Bakery which at the time was located in a very small part of the building it is in now. Bud was a wonderful mentor and teacher. Cynthia (Breckenridge) Jennerwein
